Homework Week 5

Homework Task: Washoe (The chimpanzee)

Washoe was born in West America in 1965. Washoe was captured by the US Air Force for research for the space program. Washoe was named for Washoe County, Nevada, where she was raised and was taught how to use ASL (American Sign Language)

Washoe was the first female Common Chimpanzee to learn to communicate with American Sign Language. In 1967, Allen and Beatrix Gardner invented a project that will teach Washoe ASL at the University Of Nevada, Reno. At the time previous attempts to teach chimpanzees to speak vocal languages. The Gua and Vicki projects had failed. The Gardners believed that these projects were to hard for Washoe and moved on into ASL.

Washoe had her own 8x24 trailer that had all the home needs such as: a Fridge, a bed with blankets and sheets, a couch, drawers, she had access to the clothes, toys, books and a toothbrush. Much like the human child, she underwent a regular routine with chores, outdoor play, and rides in the family car

Homework Week3-4

Delayed Gratification & the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment

Stanford Marshmallow experiment is known as the "Marshmallow Experiment" was made by a scientist named Walter Mischel. Mischel and a couple of colleagues were interested in strategies that preschool children used when it comes to treats. They used four-year olds and told them they have two options

  1. They could ring a bell at any point and summon the experimenter and earn a marshmallow
  2. Or they could wait for 15 minutes and get two marshmallows
A message to children: One small reward now, one large reward later. Some children broke down and ate the marshmallow, whereas some children tried some techniques to help pass the time such as covering there're eyes, singing songs, and sitting under the desks. Mischel found out that children could help to pass the time by using "cool" techniques.

Homework Week 3-4

Homework Challenge: Sub-Orbital flight

Suborbital Spaceflight is when a spaceship is taken up to the edge of the atmosphere but is not in space. The guy behind this is Richard Branson, the leader of Virgin Galactic. Richard is planning on making a spacecraft that will take people to the edge of the atmosphere to orbit the Earth once. This trip is really expensive at a cost of. 200,000 dollars per person.

It is projects where you pay a lot of money to orbit the Earth for a half-hour in a two seated spaceship.

About The Lynx:

The Lynx is a two seated Reusable launch vehicle (RLV) that will take humans and payloads on a half-hour suborbital flight and get as high as 100 km (330,000 feet) and then return safely back on the runway where it took off.

Daily Blog Post: The two days we spent with Mrs.Verster.

It was fun with Mrs.Verster because we got to color in a shark with heaps of patterns. We had to do some Read Theory. I really like to color in the shark because Mrs. Verster would complement my work because she said it was awesome. There were some naughty people that put shoes in the rubbish bins and throwing paper planes, along with shouting out when Mrs. Verster was talking.

Homework Week 1-2

Homework Challenge: XO Laptop

The XO Laptop is a $100 children's based laptop. The XO's operating system is a Linux with 1GB of Flash Memory. These low-powered computers uses Flash Memory instead of hard-drives. This inexpensive laptop is a sub-notebook as well.

There are two main types of Flash Memory: NAND and NOR logic gates. Flash memory does the same thing a hard-drive does, store things. Flash memory won't lose whatever you are doing on your computer when it unexpectedly loses it's batterie life.

The XO is like an ordinary laptop with stuff like: Microphone, speakers,built-in camera, touchpad, and 2 USB ports for keyboards, joysticks, steering sets, mouses, and keyboards.

These amazing laptops can be an: eBook, a mini tablet, and a laptop. The XO's screen can turn 360•  without the wires snapping inside. The screen resolution is 1200x900, with the camera resolution as 640x480.

For and Against: Gaming is better than Homework

For •1• Its a lot funner than homework because you get too learn a lot more guns if you are playing something like Black Ops II.

Against •1•  I think that if you do more homework you will get smarter a lot quicker than if you game all the time

Week 1-2 Homework

Augmented Reality (AR) means that a computer generated machine makes surroundings look better than it should. It takes the real world sounds, video, and graphics to make anything beyond your dreams, even a dinosaur. Augmented Reality is really extraordinary, take the Google Glasses for instance. These glasses are awesome because they have got these little microphones that you speak into and say something like, "Take a picture," and it takes a picture. There are many different colors that these swagalicious glasses have in store for you. There is a app for an Android phone, it's called Ivizimals. This app puts imaginary friends in real views on your screen.

The future transparent tablet is basically an iPad but it is see-through and you can go into forests and look at the animated dinosaurs with an app. Phone/App makers have come up with some pretty cool new types of app for iPhone and Androids. We call one of them EdiBear. EdiBear is basically a character that you can control via photos. You take a photo and customize it. You can choose the position of the animated character and you press select or accept. Say if you took a picture of a couch and you wanted to show this cool new app, you can make him sit on the couch. It looks like he is sitting down on the couch.
